The Kindness of Strangers
the kindness of strangers
sept. 20th – oct. 10th
The Kindness of Strangers is The Helm’s first show. It will feature the work of a yet undetermined number of artists practicing in locations all around the world. The show started out as an internet-based experiment where we asked complete strangers via email if they “had any time to help a stranger?” The request asks for the donation of a drawing in exchange for the small amount of exposure that we have to offer as a new art space. We used social networking sites such as myspace and flickr to find artists who were posting work on paper that fit within the broad aesthetic range that the Helm aspires to show. Originally we expected to have very few people respond positively to an email that essentially asked for free artwork, but the responses have been overwhelming. The Kindness has truly been an optimism-inspiring project to work on.
The Kindness of Strangers is a fundraiser. All profits that are made will be used to fund community projects, strengthen our residency program, and broaden the artistic representation in our small, developing city.
The Helm would like to extend a large, heartfelt thank you to everyone who has contributed to this project.
